The Institute for International Economics is a private, nonprofit and nonpartisan research institution in the U.S devoted to the study of international economic policy. Current agenda emphasize globalization and the backlash against it, reform of the international financial architecture, and new trade negotiations at both the multilateral and regional levels. Institute studies have helped provide the intellectual foundation for many of the major international financial initiatives, and have made important contributions to key trade policy decisions such as the Uruguay Round and the development of the WTO, NAFTA and a Free Trade Area of the Americas, APEC and East Asian regionalism, a series of United States-Japan negotiations, reform of sanctions policy, liberalization of US export controls and export credits, fast-track.

Dr. C. Fred Bergsten (Director, IIE)

C. Fred Begsten has been Director of the institute for International Economics since its creation In 1981. He was born in 1941. He received M.A.,M.A.L.D. and Ph.D.degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a B.A. magna cum laude and honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Central Methodist College.
During 1969-71, he coordinated US foreign economic policy in the White House as Assistant for International Economic Affairs. He also functioned as Under Secretary for Monetary Affirs during 1980-81.
He was chairman of the Eminent Persons Group of Asia Pacific Economic Coperation (APEC) forum from 1993 to 1995, he also co-chairs with Deputy Finance Miniter Caio Koch-Weser of Germany, the Transatlantic Study Group in 2002.
He has authored 28 books on international economic issues including No More Bashing;Building a New japan-US Economic Relationship.

MARCUS NOLAND (Senior Fellow of IIE)

Marcus Noland was educated at Swarthmore College and the Johns Hopkins University. He currently a Senior Fellow at the Institute for International Economics and an Associate of the International Food Policy Research Institute.
He was a Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the president of the U.S and has held research or teaching positions at the Johns Hopkins University, Tokyo University, Saitama University and the East-Wast Center. Noland is the co-author (with Bela Balassa) of Japan in the World Economy, co-editor (with C.Fred Bergsten) of Pacific Dynamism and the International Economic System. His book, Avoiding the Apocalypse: Future of the Two Koreas, won the prestigious Ohira Menorial Prize.
